Alcohol Ink Markers: A Creative Spark

Inspiration can come from the most unexpected places—and sometimes, from someone much younger than you might imagine. Recently, our dear friend Alana Jones-Falzano shared two photos of her 10-year-old son Roland’s artwork with us, and it completely reignited our creative spark.
The moment I saw Roland’s pieces, I was struck by the smooth, fluid color transitions and asked Alana if he had used alcohol ink markers. When she checked with him, he confirmed that he had. I had heard wonderful things about these markers but had never taken the plunge myself, despite having received a set years ago as a gift from Chuck.
I decided to bring them into the studio for our students to try, and after seeing Roland’s work, I couldn’t resist taking them home to experiment with myself. Let me tell you—these alcohol ink markers are a game changer! With a wide range of vibrant colors, dual tips (broad and fine), and even a blending tool (which I’m definitely ordering next), they’ve opened up a whole new way to bring expressive, gestural art to life.
Here are a few of my first attempts using the markers on my signature loose, gestural faces. I’m looking forward to exploring larger compositions, just like Roland’s inspiring pieces.
Huge thanks to Alana and especially to Roland for reminding us that creative energy can come from anyone, at any age.
